In the second episode of the Advance HE Talking Transformation podcast, host Dr Charles Knight, Director of Leadership, Governance and Management at Advance HE speaks to new Advance HE Chief Executive Alistair Jarvis CBE, and Professor Leanne de Main, incoming Dean at Birmingham City University Business School to explore leadership and transformation in higher education through unprecedented challenges.

Alistair discusses a number of challenges affecting higher education institutions including funding pressures, geopolitical uncertainty and expanding leadership portfolios. He emphasises that transformation is now “business as usual” and stresses the importance of clear vision combined with adaptive leadership, noting that effective governance relies more on culture and relationships than structures. 

Leanne then shares her experience implementing block teaching models, highlighting the importance of moving quickly with change, addressing “imagined barriers,” and preventing regression through structural reforms. She emphasises creating safe spaces for innovation and supporting emerging leaders through active sponsorship.
