Aegean College

This case study showcases how Aegean College used the Advance HE Transformational Change Academy to embed inclusive, future-focused curriculum design.

The case study highlights a shift from isolated enhancement activity to a coherent, institution-wide approach.

It positions curriculum as a powerful driver of student success, professional readiness and equitable

The challenge facing higher education

Higher education is experiencing rapid change.Artificial intelligence, evolving workforce demands and widening participation are reshaping expectations of graduates.

Institutions are expected to prepare students for complex, technology-rich futures while maintaining inclusive and meaningful learning experiences. For Aegean College, this required more than updating content. It demanded a fundamental rethink of curriculum purpose, design and delivery.

A strategic and inclusive response

Aegean College serves a diverse student population, including many under-represented and non-traditional learners.

Many students balance study with work, financial pressures and family responsibilities.

The College recognised that inclusion must be designed into the curriculum.

This means clear expectations, transparent assessment and accessible learning.

It also means supporting students to connect learning with future professional identity and opportunity.

From fragmented enhancement to embedded transformation

Before joining the Academy, the College had introduced initiatives on ethical AI, sustainability and the future of work. These activities built awareness but remained largely separate from core programme design.

The Transformational Change Academy acted as a catalyst for change. It enabled the College to move towards programme-level redesign aligned with institutional priorities. This created a shared language and a clearer route to embedding change through quality processes.

A practical framework for curriculum redesign

The College developed a seven-objective framework to guide transformation.

This framework connects key priorities across teaching, learning and assessment.

Key themes include:

  • Developing uniquely human capabilities such as critical thinking and ethical judgement
  • Aligning curriculum with workforce and professional requirements
  • Embedding authentic, practice-based assessment
  • Prioritising inclusion and equity in curriculum design
  • Linking learning to career pathways and professional identity
  • Building staff capability in ethical AI and inclusive practice
  • Ensuring scalability across programmes and campuses

This approach provides coherence while allowing disciplines to respond in ways that reflect their context.

Visible impact at programme level

Programme mapping translated strategy into action. Across disciplines, the College introduced changes to learning outcomes, assessment and subject content.

Examples include:

Responsible AI and research integrity embedded in science and health programmes

Sustainability, ESG and digital transformation integrated into business courses

Authentic assessments such as podcasts, case studies and professional scenarios

Stronger links between curriculum, employability and professional practice

These changes demonstrate that consistency does not require uniformity. Each programme applies shared principles in discipline-specific ways.

Designing for inclusion, wellbeing and success

Two key design principles underpin the approach.

Together, these principles strengthen student engagement and reduce barriers to success.

Benefits and institutional impact

Early outcomes show meaningful progress.

  • More inclusive and transparent curriculum design
  • Greater use of authentic and varied assessment
  • Stronger alignment with workforce needs and professional standards
  • Increased staff confidence in ethical AI and curriculum innovation
  • Emerging cultural shift towards shared institutional practice

The College is building a scalable model for long-term transformation.

What other institutions can learn

This case study offers clear lessons for the sector.

  • Begin with educational purpose rather than technology
  • Design inclusion into the curriculum, not around it
  • Use a shared framework to guide consistent yet flexible change
  • Embed transformation within existing quality processes
  • Align curriculum, assessment and student support for lasting impact

Shaping the future together

Aegean College’s journey demonstrates the power of partnership and structured change.

The Transformational Change Academy provided the framework, challenge and collaboration needed to drive meaningful progress.
