Providing coherent strategic sector support on the effective, inclusive and ethical use of AI in higher education.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming higher education, moving beyond experimentation to influence institutional strategy, educational delivery, workforce capability, governance and the student experience. While many institutions have begun exploring AI through individual initiatives and pilot projects, sector responses often remain fragmented, limiting the ability to realise sustainable, institution-wide impact.
AI and the Changing Institution has been developed to support higher education leaders in navigating this complex and evolving landscape.
This member benefit brings together global insight, sector intelligence, practical frameworks and peer engagement to help institutions develop coherent, effective and responsible approaches to AI adoption. Through a strategic focus on educational transformation, governance, workforce development and student success, the project aims to support institutions in moving from isolated AI activity to meaningful institutional change
The Challenge
Key areas of challenge include:
Translating fast-moving technological developments into institutional strategy and operating models.
Aligning educational, organisational and workforce transformation to ensure a coordinated approach to AI adoption.
Managing governance, risk and student experience implications at scale while ensuring the effective, inclusive and ethical use of AI.
Moving from pilot activity and isolated initiatives to sustainable, institution-wide implementation that delivers meaningful impact.
About the member benefit
This project combines global insight, sector intelligence, practical frameworks and peer engagement to support strategic educational transformation. Focusing on middle and senior leaders, it aims to help institutions develop coherent approaches to AI adoption across education, governance, workforce capability and student experience.
Designed for middle and senior leaders seeking to lead institution-wide AI adoption, educational transformation and strategic change within higher education.
We will be publishing sector-wide findings and insights into how AI is impacting students, staff and higher education institutions.
The report is based on joint research with the Office for Students (OfS), exploring the impact of AI across higher education.
Developments in artificial intelligence are having a profound impact on students, academic staff, and the wider higher education sector. This exploratory work will help us understand what is working well, what isn’t, and how student expectations are changing in the face of a rapidly evolving technology.
Josh Fleming, Interim Chief Executive, OfS

We are very pleased to be working with the Office for Students on this important project. AI is reshaping higher education in ways that are still becoming clear, and it is vital that institutions, students and policymakers have a reliable, evidence-based picture of where the sector currently stands. This research will help ensure that the conversation about AI in higher education is grounded in the real experiences and perspectives of students and staff.
