Part of the Advance HE member project ‘Fit for the Future: Enhancing and adapting practice for new paradigms of higher education’, this guide to multimodal learning in higher education, including case studies from HE around the world, aims to help practitioners turn their multimodal ideas into teaching practices.

Multimodal learning is about the thoughtful use of multimodal texts and design of interactive activities across media, forms and formats in the students’ learning experience applied appropriately to the given context. Multimodal texts are defined by the presence of multiple semiotic modes within one communication, for example, an infographic combines at least two modes: image and written text.

The guide is organised into four areas where multimodal learning and teaching can have an impact on student experience and outcomes:

  1. Multimodal representations in teaching
  2. Encouraging interaction and communication
  3. Designing learning-centred activities
  4. Offering multimodal assessment

Advance HE members can download the guide, along with nine accompanying case studies, below. More information on the wider ‘Fit for the Future: Enhancing and adapting practice for new paradigms of higher education’ can be found here.
