This guide for higher education governance professionals has grown out of the Advance HE Using AI in Governance forum and aims to provide practitioners with practical guidance for day-to-day use of AI tools, while maintaining the human judgement necessary for good governance.
The guide arrives at a pivotal moment, as the new CUC Higher Education Code of Governance and Advance HE’s Big Conversation both call for governance that is more agile, adaptable and connected to real-world complexity. Rather than offering technical instruction or institutional policy, it focuses on what individual practitioners can do, day to day, to strengthen governance in an AI-enabled environment.
The Using AI in Governance forum, a community of practice that started with 12 colleagues and has since grown to 84, provided a platform for sharing experience, doubts and lessons learned from early forays into AI. That diversity of views, from cautious curiosity to confident experimentation, led to the production of this shared set of practical principles would benefit governance professionals across the sector, regardless of their confidence, experience or the tools they use.
