Kate got her undergraduate MChem degree in Chemistry from the University of York and then obtained her PhD from the same place. She specialised in theoretical magnetic shielding calculations around molecules. She used this to study molecular properties such as aromaticity, antiaromaticity and bonding. After obtaining her PhD, Kate worked at Durham University as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate on a multi-million pound project around the scientific properties of knots. This combined mathematics with various sciences. Kate then completed her PGCE with a mathematics specialism here at Newcastle College University Centre (NCUC) before spending several years teaching clinical skills to ambulance crew across the UK. She recently retired from frontline ambulance work and is now a Lecturer here at NCUC in the Education team and leads the maths-specific PGCE programme. She is also Assistant Maths Hub Lead for the Great North Maths Hub, specialising in Post-16 maths education and has special interests in inclusion, equity and accessibility as well as safeguarding. She is currently an Editorial Board Member for the International Journal of First Aid Education and regularly peer reviews first aid education research articles.
