From 1990-2022, he was at Loughborough University where his research attracted individual awards from the National Physical Laboratory and the Society of Experimental Mechanics, and contributed to Loughborough’s Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Optical Engineering (2000) and High-Value Manufacturing (2014). From 2007-11, Steve was Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, leading Loughborough’s first Athena Swan institutional award submission, and he continued as the institutional lead from more than decade, securing 14 awards. He became Pro Vice-Chancellor (Enterprise) in 2011 and then Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) in 2015.
He holds external roles on the EPSRC’s Research Infrastructure Strategic Advisory Team and Equality, Diversity & Inclusion and Skills Strategic Advisory Network. In Greater Manchester, he is a member of the Business, Civic Universities and Innovation GM Boards. He was appointed as an Athena Swan panel chair in 2022.
